Agelenopsis aperta, live Description
Agelenopsis aperta is a large typical funnelweb spider found throughout most of SW USA in habitats as different as marine estruaries and desert dunes.
In nature, these spiders build large sheet-like webs extending over surrounding rocks and vegetation from tubular retreats spun in rodents burrows and other protected spaces. The spiders run over the surface of the web to capture the insect.
Safety
We do not know of any serious bites by these spiders, but there have been informal accounts of very painful bites by adult male Agelenopsis.
Care & Rearing Condtions
Agelenopsis are hardy spiders. They readily adapt to almost any size container, do not require high humidity or frequent watering and can tolerate very cold and hot conditions.
Agelenopsis aperta from Spider Pharm are from desert populations and prefer dry conditions.
For best results, keep these spiders in warm, well-aerated containers (containers with good air flow or exchange).
Small juveniles can be fed with fruit flies or small housefly maggots. Larger juveniles can be fed with housefles and small crickets and adults can can full-grown crickets.
